Description & History

Welcome Home Jersey City has been providing material and social support, such as English tutoring, to refugees and asylees resettled in the Jersey City area since 2016. We're an all-volunteer group and 501(c)(3) non-profit. In September 2018 we launched a regular program called Jersey City Fun Club. Fun Club meets three Thursdays per month from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Church of Latter Day Saints, 140 Sip Avenue. We serve 60-80 refugee children and their parents weekly, involving 25-30 volunteers from the community. School age children get support with academics while their parents get help with conversational English skills, or with some other need. We provide care for the younger children so that parents and siblings are undisturbed while they study; we drive families from their homes to the meeting site and back; and we provide dinner, thereby removing most of obstacles to participation. We close every session with a special, fun group activity such as a dance lesson, a singalong, drumming, or mask-making, to mention a few. Our greatest need is for volunteer drivers!
